Two decades later, after partnering on countless professional and personal projects (starting with a âToaster Prettyâ [page 152] image to pair with âKitchen Pretty,â which we used for a postcard promotion of both my studio and Gregâs), I asked Greg to collaborate with me on this chapter to provide some professional insights on using photographic images for a portfolio.
If youâre photographing your own work, Greg and I recommend that you follow these guidelines:
1. Gather the tools.
⢠Buy, rent, or borrow an SLR digital camera with a telephoto lens (averaging between 35 â 70mm) and an override option for manual exposure and focus. (Greg says the 18 to 55mm lens that came standard on my Canon Rebel camera will do the job.)
⢠Obtain a tripod on which to mount the camera and manage positioning, and an electronic release cable to prevent undesirable movement when working with slower shutter speeds.
⢠If you donât have access to a photo studio at your school or a basic lighting setup for shooting still life images, you can purchase three inexpensive work lights with clamps. Daylight fluorescent bulbs are inexpensive and do not generate the heat that older-style tungsten bulbs do. Fluorescent bulbs can be purchased at your local camera or hardware store. If you have some money to splurge, a complete lighting package with stands will set you back about $300.
⢠Gather miscellaneous tools for propping and arranging the images you plan to photograph, such as thumbtacks, tape, tape measure, small level, sticky tack (a reusable adhesive that rolls like clay), and a can of compressed air or a manual squeeze bulb to blow off dust from the scene. Select several pieces of 32 x 40-inch foam core (one side black and one side white) so you can add or reduce fill light and contrast.
